Going to have to try this!

Characterization of Organic Illumination Systems is a report published by Digital Equipment Company's Western Research Labs, detailing their experiments in the field of organic illumination.

Or, in less technical English, running an electric current through a pickle until it glows.

Reminds me of Grandpa Simpson and his lightbulb parties.
Yeah, only these actually glow through application of real science. The electricity heats up the pickle, causing the area around the electrodes to dry up and pull away, leaving a small cavity filled with steam. When the electricity arcs across to the still-wet pickleflesh, it excites the sodium atoms in the pickle-brine vapor, causing a yellow light bright enough to be seen outside of the pickle.

Hmmm... "Pickleflesh" sounds a bit rude.

exciting the sodium atoms

hee!
