They made me do it

After hearing good things about it, I finally saw Donnie Darko.

Wow. That was a seriously screwed up, yet riveting movie. I think it's one of those movies that'll have to be watched twice just to make sense of everything. In some ways, it reminded me of Rushmore, though the characters were actually likeable, and it actually had a kind of message. It's not a typical Hollywood teen-angst film. I'm not sure actually how it should be classified. Horror? Science fiction? Comedy?

Two commentary tracks, and plenty of extras (including director's commentary on the deleted scenes) — this is a great DVD for geeks like me. I haven't listened to all of the commentary yet, just on a couple of scenes where I was curious to figure out what was actually going on. Infuriatingly, neither of the commentary tracks explained Donnie's science teacher's refusal to continue a conversation on time travel because he could lose his job. I have a suspicion why, but don't know if it's right or not.

The Web site is pretty interesting, too.

Oh dood, check out cellar door. That takes you through the website step-by-step (kinda like the Trail for the Game!).

I LOVE that movie. I love that it's scifi and horror and time travel and suburban satire and is-he-crazy all at once. I love that it can't be classified. I love the Sparkle Motion sequence. Goddamn that is a hot movie.
What's your suspicion?
My suspicion is that the science teacher doesn't believe in God. Which is undoubtedly an awkward situation for someone who teaches at a Catholic high school.

Thanks for the cellar door tip, Moira; I was stuck on step 19...

Oh, man, the commentary for the "Cunning Visions" video is great. (And one brief moment of the video definitely has more significance now that I've seen the whole movie. I did notice it the first time I saw it, but...)

In some cities, art theaters are showing DD nightly at midnight. It seems poised to become a new Rocky Horror--without the cleanup afterward.
Really? Oh, that's cool. Does the audience "participate"?

Ha. I can imagine dancealongs to the Sparkle Motion bits....
